Chapter Twenty-Four

A DREAM COME TRUE

The thought of what Lord Birchwell might do to Kate if she were to refuse him made Sarah’s skin crawl. It felt like a hundred tiny bugs bustling up and down her arms and along her spine, sending a sickening sensation through her.

Too well did Sarah remember the night Lord Birchwell had come upon her in Kate’s chamber. Sarah had been there in his wife’s stead while Keir had smuggled Kate out of the house and to safety. Lord Birchwell had been furious upon discovering his wife gone and had turned on Sarah in a most heinous way.

Every once in a while, Sarah could still feel his weight upon her, his hands holding her down, the look in his eyes terrifying her to her very core.

If Keir had not come—

“Ye’re safe,” Keir murmured in her ear, his arm wrapping tightly around her shoulders, pulling her against him. “He canna hurt ye anymore.”

Relief swept through Sarah at Keir’s gentle reminder, and she looked up to meet his eyes. “But what of my sister?” she whispered quietly so only he would hear. “I cannot imagine…” Out of the corner of her eye, she glimpsed Eoghan by the window, the expression upon his face speaking volumes, making Sarah realize how deeply Keir’s childhood friend had come to care for her sister.

Theirs was no simple friendship. Perhaps it had started out like that. Now, though, Sarah could tell that Eoghan had come to think of Kate in a different way. The anguish and outrage upon his face told her so.

“And what about Kenna?” Magnus inquired, his gaze moving toward the dowager. He looked contemplative, as though comparing the grandmother before him to his own back home. “Right now, we can only assume that she was taken as well. Though we dunna know why? Perhaps to keep her quiet?” He cast a tentative gaze at Eoghan. “Because she had been there and witnessed what had happened? To keep her from raising the alarm?”

Sarah could tell that all these opinions suggested Kenna was in severe danger. After all, she was of no worth to Lord Birchwell but rather a hindrance. Had she been taken to England alongside Katherine? Or…?

Sarah shuddered at the thought, pushing it as far away as she could.

“What of Blackmore?” Keir asked, turning toward the dowager. “Ye said that they were meeting in secret.”

The dowager nodded in confirmation.

“What if,” Keir began, his blue gaze straying to Sarah for a moment before he once more looked toward Grandma Edie, “the letter Katherine received was not only meant to lure her back to England. The messenger told us that it was addressed to Katherine as well as Sarah. If Birchwell and Blackmore are working together, the men they sent to Scotland might have been ordered to bring both sisters back to England.”

Keir’s gaze found hers once more, and Sarah felt the breath lodge in her throat. “Kenna was taken in my stead,” she murmured, trembling as an icy shiver crawled down her spine.
